Oriental Mascot Brand Sweetened Sliced Coconut Recalled Due to Undeclared Sulfites

Summit Import Corp., in conjunction with the FDA, is recalling Oriental Mascot Brand Sweetened Sliced Coconut because it contains undeclared sulfites. Consumers who are allergic or sensitive to sulfites can incur serious or life-threatening effects if this product is eaten.

The coconut in packaged in a 4 oz. plastic container and was distributed in New York and was produced in China. The problem was discovered after routine sampling by the New york State Dept. of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors. An analysis of the food revealed that there were undeclared nitrates in the coconut. So far there have been no illnesses reported to the company.


The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfites sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites. Analysis of the "Oriental Mascot Brand Sweetened Sliced Coconut" revealed they contained 70 mg per serving.
